Nobody should be allowed to hunt endangered wildlife KoalaTracker Blog
Alex Harris - Wednesday, February 27, 2013

While state governments progress with undoing the Howard government's reigning in of gun ownership, allowing unsupervised hunting by 12 year olds, and proceed to allow hunting in our national parks (see list), all governments remain weak at the knees with regard to outlawing the slaughter of dugongs, turtles and the rare snubnose dolphin. These animals are allowed to be killed under Native Title laws, giving indigenous Australians the right to kill endangered and vulnerable wildlife.

KoalaTracker supports Bob Irwin's call to ban the hunting of wildlife under the guise of traditional hunting needs, as this has proved to be a ruse for black market sales of dugong and turtle meat, and the animals are killed in a most inhumane manner.

We therefore call for an urgent change to the Native Title Act 1993, so that any endangered or vulnerable animal or marine life is excluded from hunting by any means, for any reason.

Nobody should be allowed to hunt endangered wildlife. For some years, Bob Irwin has been arguing for a moratorium on dugong and turtle hunting. Today he calls for a complete ban, and KoalaTracker is joining other organisations in calling on the federal government to change the Native Title Act.

The article below is from Bob Irwin:

It is of grave concern to me that the Native Title Act of 1993 still allows the hunting of endangered and vulnerable species within our country.

Colin Riddell and I have been calling for a moratorium on the hunting of dugong and turtle until research shows how many are left.

We now believe a moratorium is futile.

Dugongs, turtles and fifty other Australian animals are hunted and inhumanely slaughtered in large numbers, under the guise of traditional hunting practices.

The killing has to stop. Dugongs and turtles are endangered, and we are witnessing a rapid and unwarranted decline. We can no longer stand by and watch, witness to the impending extinction of this precious marine life.

In March 2012, Rupert Imhoff and Colin Riddell exposed on the 7:30 Report, the extraordinary cruelty and abuse of provisions within the Native Title Act that enable the killings and the black market to flourish.

We therefore call for an urgent change to the Native Title Act 1993, so that any endangered or vulnerable animal or marine life is excluded from hunting by any means, for any reason.

I agree to this. Hunting for almost all people now has turned around its definition, instead of enjoying an adventure that allows camaraderie and offers a rewarding experience at the same time. It became a killing spree. Thus, necessary amendment to cover any loopholes of a native law is a must to get rid of these abusive hunters a lesson. Though there are still a number of legal hunting ranches such as http://www.huntingtexastrophies.com/ that offers the true meaning of a fallow deer hunting.
